Meteor lights up night sky in Australia

A Perth astronomer says a spectacular light show in the sky last night was a meteor.

Sightings were made as far south as Albany and inland through the Wheat Belt.

Peter Birch, from Astronomy West, estimates the meteor was about the size of a basketball.

Missed this one, looks like it was quite a show however. Peter Birch mentioned in the story was Nay’s astronmy lecturer at ECU. Awesome bloke!

Video of the event can be found here.

Most detailed image of the Crab Nebula

The Crab Nebula is one of the most intricately structured and dynamic objects ever observed. The new Hubble image of the Crab was assembled from 24 individual exposures taken with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope’s Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WPFC2) and is the highest resolution image of the entire Crab Nebula ever made.

For the impatient, the high res photo can be found here. (215KB)

Now that’s some astrophotography. Very pretty Nebula. Yet another photo that makes me want to buy a telescope and setup the camera to take some night time shots…

Update: There’s even higher resolution photos here.
