Console Generation 3 – Sony Doomed?
Looking at the way this 3rd Generation of the Game Consoles, it appears the PlayStation is doomed. Microsoft have nailed it with the Xbox 360 with competitive specs, Live and the Marketplace. Nintendo are going making some noise with the Wii. The revolutionary new controls will certainly give them a welcome presense in this 3rd generation.
But what do Sony have? Sony’s PS2 had it’s performance going for it, but to compete against Microsoft and Nintendo that’s not going to cut it. They’re also 6months late, a lot of time to catch up in the market.
What could be the nail in the coffin could be the controller. They’ve tried to up the anti by implementing tilt-sensitivity in the 3rd gen controller. But it’s lacking one key feature for the mature shooter hungry gaming controller, vibrate. Gamer Revolution cover the topic in more detail in this article. Basically another company claimed they held the patent on the vibrate technology and sued both Sony and Microsoft. Microsoft payed them out and with some other sweetenerns now holds at least 10% of their company. Sony will now have a hard time settling if they decide to drop the loosing battle in court.
So why would a gamer choose the Playstation 3 console when most of the games are now available on the Xbox with the Xbox having far greater features and online presence?
Saying that I think I’ll be upgrading from my Xbox Classic to a 3rd Gen Wii. It’s just so cool. :D
