Google creating it’s own Internet?

Rumours mount over Google’s internet plan – Times Online

Google is working on a project to create its own global internet protocol (IP) network, a private alternative to the internet controlled by the search giant, according to sources who are in commercial negotiation with the company.

Google has recently been purchasing ‘dark fibre’ accross the US. Dark fibre is fibre that was put in place a few years back but never actually finished and used.

It has also been rumored that Google has developed a shipping containter data centre that they could transport and drop in easily. This coupled with the dark fibre purchases make Google all the more interesting to keep an eye.

I just wonder how many users would be likely to use a Googlenet? No doubt, as mentioned in the above linked article, it could be likely that Google charge companies a fee to be on their Googlenet.

Just as a final note, I suggest having a quick skim read of Imagining the Google Future. :)
